Digital India is a campaign launched by the Government of India to ensure that Government services are made available to citizens electronically by improved online infrastructure and by increasing Internet connectivity. It was launched on 1st July, 2015. The vision of Digital India is to transform India into a digitally empowered society and knowledge economy.
The aim of Digital India is to provide one-stop, integrated solutions for all Government processes by harnessing technology to improve transparency and efficiency in the delivery of services to citizens.
Digital India has been envisaged as a holistic programme that covers various aspects of transformation, including infrastructure, governance, services, skills and mind-set. The major components of Digital India include:
1) Broadband Highways
2) Universal Access to Mobile Connectivity
3) Public Internet Access Programme
4) e-Governance: Reforming Government through Technology
5) e-Kranti – Electronic Delivery of Services
6) Information for All
7) Electronics Manufacturing
8) IT for Jobs
9) Early Harvest Programmes

The Digital India initiative is expected to create millions of jobs, especially in the IT and IT-enabled services sector. It will also promote entrepreneurship, spur innovation and make Indian businesses globally competitive.
Digital India will lay the foundation for a truly inclusive society by ensuring that all citizens have access to Information and Communication Technology. The initiative will also promote the use of indigenous products and services.
However, there are few challenges in the way of India becoming truly digital state. They are:
1. Lack of awareness and infrastructure: There is lack of awareness about the digital services among the people living in rural and remote areas. Also, there is a lack of infrastructure, such as electricity, broadband connectivity and computers.
2. Lack of skilled manpower: There is a shortage of skilled manpower in the field of Information and Communication Technology.
3. Security concerns: There are security concerns associated with the use of digital technology, such as identity theft, cybercrime and data breaches.
4. Privacy concerns: There are privacy concerns associated with the use of digital technology, such as the collection and use of personal data by companies.
Despite these challenges, the potential of Digital India is immense and the initiative is expected to transform the country into a knowledge economy.
