Dussehra commemorates the story of Ramayana, where Rama, prince of Ayodhya, killed the demon king Ravana. Ravana had kidnapped Rama’s wife Sita, and taken her to Lanka. Rama killed Ravana with the help of his brother Lakshmana and Hanuman, the monkey god. This victory is celebrated as Dussehra every year.
On this day, effigies of Ravana are burnt in a grand fire ceremony. People also perform dances and dramas based on the Ramayana story. The festival celebrates the triumph of good over evil, and marks the beginning of the harvest season.
